Description
Solitary Bee Hive
Solitary bees are vital pollinators and are frequent visitors and inhabitants of our gardens. These are non-swarming bees like the Red Mason Bee, Leaf Cutter Bee among others that nest alone but do sometimes nest near other bees making them look more like a group. Natural spaces for solitary bees to nest are not always available in modern gardens so this house gives us a chance to think about these important bees and how we can help them by providing them with places to nest like this Solitary Bee Hive and by planting nectar rich flowers they pollinate.
Constructed in durable FSC-certified timber the Solitary Bee Hive is an attractive shelter for Solitary Bee larvae. For added interest the house is made up of wood stacking trays screwed together underneath and can be dismantled for easy cleaning and reassembled.
Cleaning
Cleaning is not necessary as the bees will clean it out but if you want to clean the house it’s easy to do. Choose a time when the bees have hatched and all activity has stopped in Autumn or Winter. No need for harsh disinfectants or other chemicals you can just brush the old leaves or other debris from the bee holes in the trays.
How to Site the Solitary Bee Hive
Plave the house in a sunny, sheltered position facing between south to the south-east where it will be able to catch some morning sun. You can stand the house on the ground or mount it onto a post or shed up to a height of 1.5m.
