Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2025
Protecting Our Vital Ecosystems
2 February 2025
What is World Wetlands Day?
Each year, the world comes together to celebrate World Wetlands Day, an occasion aimed at raising awareness about the crucial role wetlands play in our ecosystem. This day marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, an international treaty adopted in 1971, emphasizing the need to protect these vital habitats.
The Importance of Wetlands
Wetlands are essential ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and helping mitigate climate change. Alarmingly, nearly 90% of wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, disappearing at a rate three times faster than forests. This alarming loss affects freshwater availability and the health of our planet. The urgency has never been greater to raise awareness surrounding these natural treasures and to encourage immediate action for their conservation.
Join the Movement on World Wetlands Day 2025
Set for 2 February 2025, World Wetlands Day will focus on the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” aligning with the 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands (COP15) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This significant gathering provides a platform for governments to discuss the sustainable use and conservation of wetlands. Everyone can join this vital movement—from individuals to organizations, all are encouraged to participate and contribute to raising awareness about wetlands.
