Description
German Garlic – Allium senescens Bulbs
Allium senescens is a bulbous plant sometimes known under common names such as German Garlic and Aging Allium among others.
With lilac flower heads packed with small star shaped flowers this Allium is visited by pollinators throughout the day and night while in full flower. It’s upright habit suits contemporary and formal gardens as well as looser styles like cottage gardens. Where happy the Allium will form clumps of mid green, glossy, grass like leaves. These leaves will die back evenually over autumn and winter and emerge again in spring.
The Allium scenescens flowers for weeks on upright stems in a sunny spot in early to mid summer end of May – July. They reach around 40cm high and spread by multiplying 30cm or more over several years where happy. It loves a well-drained sandy, loam or clay soil in a sheltered position in full sun.
While the flowers do make an interesting cut flower, it is worth bearing in mind that, like other Allium species, there is a mild oniony scent to them!
